Here\u2019s a short list of potential explanations compiled by the BETTER team.<\/p>\n<h2>Lower than usual blood sugar<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Meal bolus administered twice<\/strong>. If you use an insulin pump, you can view your history of administered boluses. If you\u2019re on multiple daily injections, you can get an insulin pen that \u201cmemorizes\u201d administered boluses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Different injection sites<\/strong> have different absorption rates. For instance, insulin that is injected in the abdomen, in the arm or in a muscle (if you don\u2019t use the right type and length of catheter or needle) will be absorbed more quickly.<\/li>\n<li>After you\u2019ve done<strong> physical activity<\/strong>, you could experience lower blood sugars for up to 48\u00a0hours. Be extra mindful of monitoring your blood sugar throughout the night.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alcohol consumption <\/strong>increases the risk of hypoglycemia for about 24\u00a0hours. <strong>BE CAREFUL!<\/strong>\u00a0Glucagon (a hormone that doubles as an emergency treatment for severe hypoglycemia) is less effective when blood alcohol concentration is high. This hormone sends a signal for the liver to release stored glucose. But since the liver is busy metabolizing alcohol, it will be less responsive to glucagon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stopping the use of drug<\/strong>s that raise blood sugars, such as cortisone (prednisone).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Addison\u2019s disease<\/strong> (adrenal insufficiency). This rare condition is characterized by an insufficient production of cortisone by the body. If you have any concerns, please talk to your doctor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Higher than usual blood sugar<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Missed insulin bolus<\/strong>. If you use an insulin pump, you can view your history of administered boluses. If you\u2019re on multiple daily injections, you can get an insulin pen that \u201cmemorizes\u201d administered boluses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Starting to use a drug<\/strong> that raises blood sugars, such as cortisone (prednisone).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improper insulin storage<\/strong>, i.e., at a temperature that is either too hot or too cold, can destroy insulin molecules and increase the risk of hyperglycemia. Make sure to check your insulin\u2019s expiration date. Unexplained hyperglycemia can be a good indicator of a symptomless infection.<\/li>\n<li><a aria-label=\"undefined (s\u2019ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\" href=\"https:\/\/type1better.com\/en\/what-do-we-know-about-the-dawn-phenomenon-and-type-1-diabetes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Dawn phenomenon<\/strong><\/a> is the blood sugar increase that people with type 1 diabetes experience in the morning\u2019s early hours. This increase is caused by various hormones, like cortisol, that boost the release of sugar by the liver.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Acatheter<\/strong> issue (bent, pulled out, etc.) if you use an insulin pump.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is recommended to check your <a aria-label=\"undefined (s\u2019ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.diabete.qc.ca\/en\/living-with-diabetes\/care-and-treatment\/hypo-hyper-glycemie\/hyperglycemic-emergencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ketone bodies<\/a> when your blood sugar is high (generally over 15.0 mmol\/L).\u00e0<\/p>\n<h2>Other factors that can make your blood sugar high <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">or<\/span><\/strong> low<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Miscalculating <\/strong>carbs or an insulin dose&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><a aria-label=\"undefined (s\u2019ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\" href=\"https:\/\/type1better.com\/en\/how-fat-and-protein-impact-your-blood-sugar-and-how-to-adjust-your-insulin-dose-accordingly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Eating foods that are high in fat or protein<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>High physical or psychological<strong> stress<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hormonal changes<\/strong> (period, menopause)<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Weather conditions<\/strong>, especially heatwaves<strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Change in schedule <\/strong>that affects sleeping hours and mealtimes (new work schedule, trip, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Change in <strong>fitness<\/strong> habits&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><a aria-label=\"undefined (s\u2019ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ArYhoqpK1FQ&amp;t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Lipodystrophies<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Type 1 diabetes is <strong>an unpredictable illness.<\/strong> Blood sugar levels can be hard to manage even on a typical day and will often be higher or lower than usual for no obvious reason.
