But did you know that other medications can sometimes be used alongside insulin to support diabetes management?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A complement to insulin<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people living with T1D may face specific challenges, such as significant blood glucose fluctuations, weight gain, insulin resistance or difficulty reaching their blood glucose targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some situations, medications called<a href=\"https:\/\/type1better.com\/en\/treating-type-1-diabetes-with-insulinand-medication\/\"> <strong>adjunctive therapies<\/strong><\/a> may be considered in addition to the main treatment. Their purpose is not to replace insulin, but rather to help improve blood glucose management or address specific needs. These medications are generally used to treat type 2 diabetes, but they may also have beneficial effects for people living with T1D.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of adjunctive medications include metformin (Glucophage), GLP-1 receptor agonists (e.g.,<a href=\"https:\/\/type1better.com\/en\/could-a-new-weight-loss-medication-help-with-t1d-management\/\"> tirzepatide<\/a> (Mounjaro), semaglutide (Ozempic)), and SGLT-2 inhibitors (e.g., empagliflozin (Jardiance), canagliflozin (Invokana)).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These medications may, among other things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reduce certain<a href=\"https:\/\/type1support.ca\/en\/how-do-you-minimize-blood-sugar-variations-after-meals\/\"> blood glucose fluctuations<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce insulin requirements in some cases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>support<a href=\"https:\/\/type1better.com\/en\/is-there-a-link-between-weight-and-type-1-diabetes-management\/\"> weight management<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>help prevent long-term diabetes complications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, these medications are not appropriate for everyone and require an assessment of their potential benefits and risks by a healthcare professional.
