{"id":10032,"date":"2025-11-04T09:14:44","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T14:14:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/type1support.ca\/?p=10032"},"modified":"2025-11-04T09:15:40","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T14:15:40","slug":"rage-bolusing-or-when-hyperglycemia-meets-impulsivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/type1support.ca\/en\/rage-bolusing-or-when-hyperglycemia-meets-impulsivity\/","title":{"rendered":"Rage Bolusing, or When Hyperglycemia Meets Impulsivity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you live with type&nbsp;1 diabetes, you know this situation all too well: blood sugar check, too high, panic rising. \u201cIt has got to go down!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welcome to what we call \u201crage bolusing.\u201d Simply put, it describes the irresistible urge to inject rapid-acting insulin to immediately correct hyperglycemia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It manifests in a few different ways, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Injecting more insulin than needed, without calculations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Injecting multiple doses in a short amount of time, even though the previous dose is still active.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a natural reaction; however, it\u2019s important to remember that <strong>injecting more insulin doesn\u2019t lower blood sugar faster<\/strong>.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article explores the risks associated with \u201crage boluses\u201d and suggests some tips to better avoid them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading alignwide\" id=\"we-re-a-studio-in-berlin-with-an-international-practice-in-architecture-urban-planning-and-interior-design-we-believe-in-sharing-knowledge-and-promoting-dialogue-to-increase-the-creative-potential-of-collaboration\" style=\"font-size:40px;line-height:1.1\"><strong>Risks associated with rage boluses<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Impulsively injecting insulin to correct hyperglycemia can provoke one of the following situations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hypoglycemia.<\/strong> Too much insulin or insulin stacking can bring your blood sugar too low, turning the initial hyperglycemia into hypoglycemia that you now have to deal with. Always carry with you <a href=\"https:\/\/type1better.com\/en\/treatment-of-hypoglycemia-is-the-15-g-15-m-rule-still-relevant\/\">a treatment for hypoglycemia<\/a> (e.g., glucose tablets) and follow a clear plan (e.g., quantity, when to check blood sugar again).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Blood sugar rollercoaster.<\/strong> To treat hypoglycemia caused by taking too much insulin, you need to ingest carbs. And in an attempt to raise your blood sugar quickly, often, you might ingest too many carbs \u2026 which brings you back into hyperglycemia and triggers a physically and mentally exhausting <a href=\"https:\/\/type1support.ca\/en\/hypoglycemia-how-not-to-eat-everything\/\">cycle of ups and downs<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stress and frustration.<\/strong> Watching your blood sugar fluctuate and not being able to stabilize it can bring about feelings of guilt and anxiety that might lead you to taking more insulin, creating a vicious cycle that is hard to break.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Impact on daily life.<\/strong> Sports, work, going out \u2026 any activity hampered by hyperglycemia can become risky if your blood sugar drops than rises again too quickly due to impulsive injections.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These risks show that the goal is not to correct hyperglycemia as quickly as possible, but, rather, to correct it using method and reflection. Some strategies can help avoid impulsive boluses on the daily.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading alignwide\" id=\"we-re-a-studio-in-berlin-with-an-international-practice-in-architecture-urban-planning-and-interior-design-we-believe-in-sharing-knowledge-and-promoting-dialogue-to-increase-the-creative-potential-of-collaboration\" style=\"font-size:40px;line-height:1.1\"><strong>How to avoid rage bolusing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Good news! It may seem difficult to avoid these reactions, but there are strategies that can help you stay calm and make a sound decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Think, then act.<\/strong> Take a deep breath, and check your blood sugar and <a href=\"https:\/\/type1support.ca\/en\/what-do-trend-arrows-mean\/\">trend arrows<\/a> (if you use a continuous glucose monitor [CGM]). Then, check for a recent dose of rapid-acting insulin. Taking this time will help you decide more calmly.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Look at active insulin.<\/strong> Most types of rapid-acting insulin have an action duration of four hours. Taking into account the <a href=\"https:\/\/type1support.ca\/en\/active-insulin-or-how-insulin-acts-in-your-body-after-the-injection\/\">active insulin<\/a> can help reduce the risk of overbolusing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use your <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/type1support.ca\/en\/how-to-manage-hyperglycemia-more-accurately-with-the-correction-factor\/\"><strong>correction factor<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> The correction factor indicates by how much your blood sugar drops with one insulin unit; it is established by your healthcare team. It is best to use it in your calculations for a more accurate dose, rather than bolusing randomly and fall into the vicious cycle of repeating injections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relax.<\/strong> Stress alone can raise your blood sugar \u2026 try and take a walk, read or listen to music. T<a href=\"https:\/\/type1support.ca\/en\/taking-care-of-your-mental-health-when-living-with-type-1-diabetes\/\">aking care of your mental health<\/a> is a concrete way to stabilize your blood sugar levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t bottle it up.<\/strong> Sharing how you feel with a trusted friend can help you to avoid acting impulsively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading alignwide\" id=\"we-re-a-studio-in-berlin-with-an-international-practice-in-architecture-urban-planning-and-interior-design-we-believe-in-sharing-knowledge-and-promoting-dialogue-to-increase-the-creative-potential-of-collaboration\" style=\"font-size:40px;line-height:1.1\"><strong>Breaking the cycle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Other strategies can help you reduce rage bolus episodes over the long term.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Look for the culprit(s).<\/strong> Write down your insulin doses, meals, activities and stress levels to better understand <a href=\"https:\/\/type1support.ca\/en\/why-is-my-blood-sugar-high-or-low\/\">what causes hyperglycemia<\/a> and identify situations where you are most likely to bolus impulsively.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Expect the imperfect. <\/strong>Not every day will be perfect, and out of range blood sugar levels will happen. Still, it is important to avoid the <a href=\"https:\/\/type1support.ca\/en\/hypoglycemia-how-not-to-eat-everything\/\">rage bolus-hypoglycemia-overcompensating cycle<\/a> and to focus on making informed decisions rather than impulsive ones.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Identify and address the root cause.<\/strong> If you find yourself constantly in hyperglycemia at the same time of day (e.g., after lunch), it may be more efficient to readjust the associated insulin dose (in this particular case, the lunchtime dose). This way, you\u2019re addressing the cause as well as the symptoms.
